NFL Scandals – 5-29-15

For all of the negative attention being surrounding Deflategate, there are unintended

benefactors of the news – retailers. Online retailers in particular are seeing a major spike

in sales of Tom Brady’s number 12 jerseys since the New England Patriots QB was

suspended for his role in Deflategate. Brady merchandise on Fanatics.com has increased

100% following the release of the Wells Report.

From one scandal to another, NFL teams reportedly received millions of tax dollars to

hold military tributes at games. From 2011 to 2014, the government paid $5.4 million to

14 NFL teams for what it termed advertising and recruiting tactics. The National Guard

insists that the organization’s contracts with NFL teams and other sports groups were

never intended to pay for salutes to the troops. Regardless, the Guard is reducing future

payouts to teams because of resource constraints and budget cuts. Whether or not these

were sponsorship deals that never should have been made or just a big misunderstanding,

the story represents another PR nightmare for the NFL.

Lagardere Golf – 5-28-15

The latest episode of Universal Sports Network’s “Beyond the Medals,” featured Steve

Loy, president of Lagardère Unlimited Golf. Loy assesses the Olympic opportunities for

professional players and also provides an in-depth account of his 25-year relationship

with Phil Mickelson, from his beginnings as his college coach and now as his agent and

business partner. Lagardère Unlimited represents one of the world’s largest portfolios of

players including Mickelson, Jordan Spieth and Keegan Bradley.

Also on the episode, newly crowned 2015 Masters Champion Spieth, and fellow

professional golfers Bradley and Aaron Baddeley reveal their excitement of the

opportunity to play for an Olympic gold medal as well as the challenging impact the

Games will have on the 2016 PGA Tour schedule.

Sharing his memories of watching the Olympics on TV, Speith said, “Looking back to

when I was just a kid, I mean watching the Olympics was just one of the coolest

experiences, just being a sports nut. I remember watching the Opening Ceremonies and

all of the athletes from the United States walking out together in their matching outfits,

and having little American flags that they’re waving along with the big flag, and thinking

to myself that’s like – that’s got to be the coolest moment for an athlete in the world.”
